Definition of Physical Education & it's Objectives

Physical Education is the part and parcel of educational program that aims to promote the optimum development of an individual's physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual through varied and selected activities. It is an instructional program that gives attention to the development and care of the body. It is an important part of the school curriculum for it contributes to the total development as an individual by helping build your knowledge and understanding of fitness. It also done through active participation in carefully selected physical activities such as sports, dances, games, gymnastics, exercises and among others. The ultimate goal of Physical Education is to fitness. 

The following are the objectives of PE:

  1. Physical Development

Through active participation in PE classes and physical fitness activities, you learn the skills necessary to develop and maintain good health and physical fitness. These skills include knowing the proper way of positioning and moving the body when doing physical fitness activities.

You also get to find out more about your body, especially its abilities and its limitations. These abilities include your body’s capability to do certain activities very well. Your limitations may include your inability to perform certain tasks.

2. Emotional Development

Physical education helps you acquire positive emotional traits such as confidence, discipline, courage and perseverance. These can be developed during activities such as games, exercises, and dances. These traits are necessary to help you succeed and become an outstanding citizen as you grow.


3. Mental Development

Physical education helps you gain the knowledge you need to become fit and healthy. Through this, you obtain an understanding of the different rules and strategies involved in different sports, games and dances. This helps you develop your ability to analyze and decide how you are going to participate and discover ways to improve to get the best possible results for you and your group.


4. Social Development

Physical education offers several opportunities that enable you to put into practice desirable social traits such as respect for oneself and others, cooperation, sportsmanship, friendliness and honesty. These traits can be manifested during a team practice, a game or a dance performance. 


5. Spiritual Development

Through engaging sports, physical activities need such divine intervention. Thus, asking guidance for the safety of performing such activities would needs spiritual enlightenment for we are nothing without HIM.

How to Compute BMI

BMI means Body Mass Index . It measures the thinness and fatness of the body. This is an indicator whether we are underweight, normal, overweight , or obese.  Too much fat in our body could lead to high risk of having diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stress , cancer and arthritis. It is important to know our BMI so that we will know whether we are at risk or needs to improve to achieve fitness.  Here is how to compute the BMI.
