Dance and Fitness

Dance refers to creative movements or isolated movements. It is derived from man's activities either by mimicking or by creative choreography. This is usually set to a music and pattern of beats. Dance movements may tell story or interpret a song. These dances are called Theatrical Dance. These are usually performed by dancers on a stage with spectators. On the other hand, there are dance movements that are intended for social interaction or exercise. These dances are called participatory. Ballroom and folk dances are examples of participatory dance. 
 


How important is dancing? 

Some of you may not be fond of dancing or may be probably be shy to dance because you think you are not good in dancing. But you should know that dancing is not only for its aesthetic value or for entertainment. There are other benefits or importance of dancing. These includes the following;

 1. Dancing is a form of exercise.
2. Dancing is a means of expressing oneself.
3. Dancing can be a form of mental or physical relaxation.
4. Dancing can develop a sense of unity because dancers are required to move in unison with other dancers.

What are the classification of dance?

The following are the classifications of dance:

1. Ballroom Dance - a partner dance and also competitive dance performed socially.


Competitive Ballroom - Dancesports

2. Social Dance - a dance for socializing with other people like community dance.


3. Folk Dance - a dance that portrays the nature and culture of a community or activities of a certain group of people.


4. Festival Dance - a dance suitable for special occasion and festivities. Another example of festival dance is the Loi Krathong. (click the highlighted word to check/review the dance)


5. Ceremonial or Religious Dance - a dance performed for religious ceremonies.

The haka is a ceremonial dance or challenge in Māori culture.


6.  Occupational Dance - dance that shows work and labor.


7.  War Dance - a dance for battle and war engagement.

Maglalatik Dance is a mock war dance that demonstrates a fight between the Moros and the Christians over the prized latik or coconut meat 

8. Interpretative or Creative Dance - a movement interpreting or symbolizing something. 


9. Courtship Dance - a dance of showing an interest to the opposite sex.
  


You may try any of these dances at home with your families and friends. But before you dance, you should check your physical fitness because this is also essential in dancing.  Balance and  flexibility are two most important skills you need in dancing.

Balance is the ability to maintain an upright position while standing and moving while Flexibility refers to the ability of the joints to move through a full range of motion. 

You may consider dancing as an option in improving or maintaining your fitness.

How to Compute BMI

BMI means Body Mass Index . It measures the thinness and fatness of the body. This is an indicator whether we are underweight, normal, overweight , or obese.  Too much fat in our body could lead to high risk of having diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stress , cancer and arthritis. It is important to know our BMI so that we will know whether we are at risk or needs to improve to achieve fitness.  Here is how to compute the BMI.
